The town of Port Franklin is a small coastal town located in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is situated near the coast of the Bass Strait, approximately 15 kilometers from the township of Foster. Port Franklin has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s, and its picturesque surrounds and stunning views make it a popular tourist destination to this day.

The local area was first explored during the 1790s by George Bass and Matthew Flinders. The two explorers were in search of the entrance to Western Port Bay, which they eventually discovered in 1798. Bass and Flinders named the area after the British Prime Minister at the time, Benjamin Franklin, and the area was soon settled by early pioneers.

By the early 1800s, Port Franklin had become an important port for the transportation of goods. In 1826, a timber yard was established to facilitate the shipment of timber from the surrounding forests. Over the next few decades, the town grew rapidly, with traders, merchants, and other businesses setting up shop to capitalize on the growing trade.

The community was hit hard by the gold rush of the 1850s, as many of the young men from the town and surrounding areas left to seek their fortunes in the goldfields. However, despite these setbacks, Port Franklin continued to grow and prosper as a major center of commerce and trade for the local area.

Despite its importance in the early years, however, the town of Port Franklin eventually began to decline. By the early 1900s, the timber industry had all but disappeared, and the town's economy was struggling. However, in the 1950s, the town began to reinvent itself as a tourist destination.

Today, Port Franklin is a thriving tourist town that serves as an idyllic location for visitors looking to experience the natural beauty and serenity of the region. Visitors can enjoy a range of tourist attractions, including walks along the coast, boat tours of nearby islands, and visits to local parks and gardens.

The town's history is still evident to anyone who visits Port Franklin today. The architecture, local landmarks, and stories of the people who once lived and worked here serve as a reminder of the town's rich past. Today, Port Franklin is a reminder of both the struggles and triumphs of the early pioneers who helped to shape the region, and the endless possibilities that life offers to those who dare to take a chance.
